Wintery White

When it really starts to snow,
when the heavens open up and blanket the land in icy whiteness,

what kind of tree are you?

Do you tip your face to the sky telling each snowflake, "come to me!"

Do you collect it in your arms until you can hold no more,

and you look like you're covered with baby polar bears?

Or, maybe you're more of a "shake it off" kind of tree.

You like snow, just not on you

and prefer to stock up on snowballs, waiting for the fun to begin.

Then again,
maybe you're the kind of tree

that's happy it will never see a day of snow -
Ever!

  1. Hello Rosemary,
What a lot of snow!! Amazing to see. But it's great to make pictures of the white nature just like this. Wonderful to see the snowy trees with the clear blue sky.
Here in the Netherlands it's 10 degrees. It looks like springtime.

    Many greetings,
    Marco

    1. Thanks Chris and I'm not at all surprised that you choose the tropical palm tree :) because that's what all your beautiful birds choose as well!

  3. I always love watching the trees shed their snow the next day or two after a big snow storm. The wind or the sun causes the snow to fall from the boughs of the trees in countless little mini avalanches - crashing to the ground, for some reason it's mesmerizing to watch.

    1. I can't believe these poor trees don't topple over under the weight of the snow. Thank goodness for the wind that relieves them of some of the burden in the "mini avalanches" that you mention. I like your description!

    1. Annula, I love your description of the weather where you live, especially "fog as the icing on the cake!" With just a few degrees colder the rain can turn to snow :)

  6. Rosemary, you have a lot of snow! The pines and tujas are covered in snow, like here in my garden. We have the similar weather, you were right.I hope you're warm in your home.

    1. This is the best kind of winter in Canada, Willy. We often get freezing rain in January which is terrible for the dormant plants in the garden, so I am very happy with this thick blanket of insulating snow :)

  8. It'snow secret, I love the white stuff and am the first kind of tree tipping my face up and telling each snowflake, "come to me." Part of the reason for my affinity for snow is that we seldom get it here and when we do, schools close, everything slows down and people head outside to walk around at night which is so much brighter because of the snow. We see neighbors who we usually only see during the summer. Yea for snow! Thanks, as always, for such a gorgeous post!

    1. Nice to have someone celebrating the snow with me! It's even true over here, we're all out brushing the snow off our cars, or shovelling the walkway and we get a chance to talk to our neighbours and of course, complain :)

  9. Do nas też przyszła zima, ale wolę oglądać Twoje śliczne zdjęcia, niż wyjść na zewnątrz. Pozdrawiam.
We also came to the winter, but I prefer to see your beautiful pictures, than go outside. Yours.

  10. Pretty pictures of cold snow. We rarely get snow and it never looks like that. When snow falls the palm trees are quite unhappy about it.

I've lived in cold climates and I prefer the warm winter.

    1. What on earth is the snow doing anywhere near palm trees! That just doesn't seem right. I'm glad you are able to live in a temperature that makes you happy.

  12. Beautiful photographs once again Rosemary. I am definitely a look up and say 'come to me' person. I love the snow, and the cold, and as far as I am concerned there could be both all of the time. Only with sunshine of course. Lovely post.

Here it seems like spring, the buds of trees come from, it is probably this upcoming weekend colder.

  19. Snow-covered landscape can be desolate and stark but it has a beauty of its own. Your photos brought out this beauty wonderfully. Of course we are more familiar with the last image of swaying coconut trees on palm-fringed beach.

  20. Lovely photos, to accompany a creative post – timely for those of us looking out at deep snow still on the ground and wondering why, o why, we prefer definitive seasons instead of unrelenting cheer of balmy weather.

And, though you're living in snow country, I still must ask, what kind of tree are you, Rosemary?

    1. Thank you Lee, I would get so bored with the same temperature all year. I'm a snow-lovin' tree, if it's going to be winter then bring on the snow otherwise it's cold for nothing. But, ask me again in about 20 years and I might have a different opinion about that :)

  22. Agreed, the snow is aesthetically fantastic, but otherwise all it does is kill our plant life and get in the way of just about everything.

    1. I'm glad you like the way the snow looks :) Most people aren't snow-lovers. I'm pretty impressed that trees can withstand the cold, the snow, the wind and the ice and still bounce back fresh as new in the Spring.
