Gone To Seed

Seeds are marvellous mini-miracles.

To look at them, one would never suspect
that inside each tiny package,

a seed,
dry and wrinkled,
some no bigger than a grain of sand,

Could contain the power of
Transformation!

If you didn't witness it with your own eyes
would you believe it at all?

To begin this transformation
the plant must first come
completely undone.

It drops this gift-wrapped,
blueprint of itself
to the ground

Where it must remain
buried deep
in the dark
earth

Until the light
calls it back
to life

Miracles occur in the most unlikely places.
~
There are more miracles
in a square yard
of earth
than in all the fables
of the world.

The Personalities Of Pink

Sometimes pink arrives with trumpets.
Deep and throaty,
they shout out from
the back of the garden.

Their personality is unmistakeable;
tall and stately,
they command my attention.

Sometimes pink arrives with a twinkle,
with a momentary flash
that catches my eye,
as if a fairy has suddenly fluttered by.

Did I really see it?
Or, was it just my imagination?

Sometimes pink plays tricks on me.
It hides behind things,
choosing objects that are transparent,
invisible,
then takes on their form,
like this spider's web.

Sometimes pink has a job to do.

It colours the petals
that create this fortress,
to hide, from potential thieves,
a fortune of
sun-infused jewels.

Sometimes pink attracts things
that like sweetness,
like bees and wasps
and flies
...and
me!

And sometimes pink arrives
without a sound.
I notice the garden is quiet,
serene, peaceful
and calm.

That's how I know
pink has
arrived.

Crazy In Love

Crazy in love
or
In love with crazy :)

I can't help it...  I love my crazy-looking monarda!

Whether they're dancing out to greet me with a sideways smile

Or trying to scare me with their bright red tentacles

They always tip their Mad-Hatter hats
in my direction

Sometimes I get a surprise "hat-in-a-hat!"

They are more Halloween...

Than Halloween itself
(Mr. Hitchcock would be proud :)

They gather in my garden
in unplanned drifting clusters

But infatuated as I am
I only have eyes (and camera) for one at a time

My first love was Mr. Red
But lately...

This fuscia-purpley one has caught my eye

Unless -

I see this candy-pink fluffy creature

Which is a stunning hot-pink before it fully opens

And now there is a new temptress in my garden

Monarda Bradburiana is her name
(I could fall for her too)

Oh, what the heck
I'll be crazy in love
with them all!

Blink and You'll Miss It

We have the cutest Hummingbird couple visiting us each day.

They come to sip nectar from the re-blooming flowers, especially the Monarda and every once in a while from the hummingbird feeder we have out.

When they whiz by me in the garden, I always realize that one-second too late who it was, and they're gone.

This time my daughter Morgan was nearby with her camera and managed to catch the hummingbird as it flew past! (You can see it against one of the white pillars.)

Blink!

The Mad Hatter

In my garden my imagination runs wild. This red monarda reminds me of a crazy creation by the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland.
