Readle-eak!

This Common Grackle sounds just as it looks.

Spelled out, it's: "Readle-eak!"
or just think of the swing of a rusty gate.

  2. You know, I thought I'd never miss that sound when I moved from Atlanta, where there were grackles by the dozens visiting my garden and making big racket. But I *did* miss the sound when there was less of it here in Connecticut. Who would have thought it?

    1. It's so true Lee, they can being annoying when they show up in large numbers and swarm the feeders, but once they've disappeared for the winter I'm happy to see them again in the spring :)

  3. We had the grackles here recently for a few days on their way out of town. In the Spring they're here for months, raising their young and zipping around, but in the Fall, they only make a brief appearance. We have to wait until next Spring before we see them again.

    1. The camera catches its eye colour so vividly, it doesn't look so "angry" to me in real life :)

  8. Sure sounds like the rusty gate.
A bit scary though to look at the bird.

    1. This one looks a little rumpled, like it has hit some bad weather along the way. In the spring their colour is quite sleek and beautiful. In the photo he looks more scary than he is in real life.

    1. Thank you Silvina, they arrive in great numbers here in the spring, but leave once the weather gets too cold.
