Last Call for the Seed Bar

The call went out that winter's on its way,
everyone turned up at the Seed Bar today!

Glad to see the baby goldfinch (on the left) got the message to "fatten up!"

There's no pushing or shoving going on just a lot of cooperation and sharing.

Even strangers are showing up, like this Red-breasted Nuthatch.

The pensive look of this Song Sparrow touched my heart.
These little tykes head out into such a harsh world.
Stay and face the winter or fly the distance to a warmer climate...
I'm glad it's not a choice I have to make.

He helped himself to some white safflower seeds and sang me a sweet song.

And then he was gone.

  2. Just watching those birds helping themselves at the seed bar brings so much happiness and comfort to my heart :-)
They will migrate to warmer climates for sure and that's when I get to see them! Flocks after flocks!
Performing spectacular patterns on the sky!
Very beautiful in their own way.

  4. Delightful - it looks as if you spend as much money on the birds as I do. When restocking with seeds and nuts they cost me a small fortune, but they are worth it. They bring an extra dimension to the pleasure of the garden.

    1. We panic when we find we have run low on seed! I can't stand the thought of the birds showing up and we have nothing to offer them. It just wouldn't be a real garden for me without them, they bring it to life :)

  11. Time for me to take down my hummingbird feeder (they've gone farther south) and put up my regular feeder for the birds that stay the winter.

    1. I haven't seen our hummingbird around for a while either. Aren't we lucky that some of these birds are able to endure our winters?

    1. That's true, room for one more goldfinch :) Are you finding the green text in the blog post too dark to read? Are you using Firefox, Safari or something else, also are you Mac or PC (I'm just trying to figure out where the problem might be).

  13. How good spirited of you and others to spend good money on food for these feathered friends. I've tried putting seeds out for them in my garden but they seem to prefer the fruits and berries. I've seen them eating them with gusto.

    1. Unfortunately there aren't any fruit or berries left for them to eat over here. They seem to be stocking up on seeds before they leave for the winter.
