Abandoned

Bare branches remind me of an abandoned house;
a skeleton of what once was.

Gone are the birds that flit from branch to branch,
warming the air with their lively chatter.

No longer protected,
winds blow through the naked forest,
whistling a melancholy tune.

The sun sets and shadows grow long with gloom.

Hang on to yourself,
Winter's on its way.

  1. Abandoned, perhaps. But beautiful, stripped down to naked honesty. As your images show so well.

  5. Dear Rosemary - I am shivering viewing your photos, but there is beauty in the trees dark shilouettes, and the promise that the spring will return.

    1. In the fall and winter, trees take center-stage - they are so dramatic looking right now!

  6. As sad as it makes me to see bare branches, knowing that cold weather and snow are coming, I enjoy the leafless limbs because it makes my bird watching so much easier. Perhaps it's just the time of year for Pileated/hairy/downy woodpeckers anyways, but I always see them once the leaves have fallen.

    1. Unfortunately the birds seem to disappear with the falling leaves over here but I'm glad you get a chance to see so many of them still in action.

  7. I enjoyed your beautiful photos, Rosemary. I like to see the structure of the trees in winter, but I agree, there is something sad about it as well. Hurry up, spring!

  10. Once again, I loved your photos and words.

    I know this is strange, but winter always gives me such a sense of hope. As if everything has fallen asleep and resting, just waiting to be woken in the spring.

  14. Hi Rosemary, The weather here has been so mild that fall almost seems destined to last forever. I hope to be able to sneak outside this afternoon and get some of the last bulbs planted. The temperatures are supposed to fall on Friday.
